Finally done with project

Finally done.

Access the file at http://www.zachwhalen.net/s08/richard/gamestuff.zip .

First, create a target folder and extract gamestuff.zip into it.
Next, install the MSGothic font. For Windows users, open Fonts in (Classic View) Control Panel, and copy/paste the font into it. It will install automatically.

Next, run Setup.exe and pick the target folder. Click the left button, and it will install to that directory.

Finally, run RPG_RT.exe. Have fun!

Instructions: You can open the menu in any free-moving non-combat scene by pressing Esc. Esc will also work as your cancellation key.
Use the arrow keys or numpad keys to move Kurtis, switch between menu options, or choose which enemy to attack in combat.
Use Enter/Return or the Spacebar as your activate event/talk/confirm command button.
You can save your game at any time on the World Map by opening the menu with Esc and selecting Save, then choosing savegame slot.

Note: this game is a parody of standard turn-based RPGs and contains crude humor and foul language. If any of these elements offend you, I advise that you stop taking life so seriously.  read more »

Final Project: Kiwi Country (An Interactive Fiction)

Hooray, my game is done! And! It mostly came out how I wanted it to (...mostly)!

First off, make sure you at least have Zoom Version 1.1.2 or it won't run.  read more »

For anyone who still wanted to sell their soul...

Okay, if anyone wants to try and play this, here it is. I used Inform's default file type, so I hope that works... If it doesn't please comment and I'll try to fix it.
I hope everybody has a good summer and good luck on exams!

IF Project: Done

The big file (600K or so) includes Frotz for anyone who doesn't have it.

The smaller file is all the source code and project file for Inform 7.

Hope you enjoy it. Feedback appreciated.

JOB OFFER: CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISISM

I am in the process of creating a short, I mean very short hyper-text fiction. It would be awesome if anyone could go through the fiction and give me their feedback. I wanted to do so much more but there just not enough time in the day to do it all. Let me know how the design layout looks, the colors, the narrative. It doesn't matter let me know what you like even better dislike. I pretty sure I can handle the pain. Thanks alot.

projecting woes

As I'm trying to piece together my final project, I've run into a bit of a bump. See, for the paper (because I am at a lack of imagination for another medium otherwise - thank you, semester) I was hoping to see how language, image, and music mixed with interactivity creates or supports the narratives of different video games that either revolve around a musical premise or where the music itself aids in creating a narrative that it otherwise undefined.

The difficulty I'm having is that I forgot/underestimated the number of video games out there that "revolve around a musical premise." When I first drew this up, I had pretty much only Electroplankton, Lumines, Meteos, and probably Rez (though I haven't played it yet) in mind. But after reading through a few books, I realized I'd completely overlooked those games of Guitar Hero/Rock Band, the entire Beatmania (Dance Dance Revolution, etc.) series, those karaoke games and some other ones I'd never heard of before such as Buzz (some music quiz game), PaRappa the Rapper and so on.  read more »

Update for those interested in my final project

Been awhile, huh? That is, if you pay attention to how frequently I post. Just in case any of you are interested, unfortunately my final project (a parody RPG made using RPG Maker 2003) will not be presentable by tomorrow--I have a lot of upcoming academic obligations to finish, and this one is due last. However, if any of you do want to play it, I will try to upload the file to this forum when I'm finished.
A prior warning - I've never used a Mac, so I don't know if the game will run or, if it does, whether or not you can install a Microsoft font. Hopefully things will work in that regard, because the default font is very hard to read. If anyone knows how to install fonts on a Mac, please upload some instructions for those people who want to play my game.

That's all for now.

1922

Hey folks. You probably saw my presentation today in class for my text-based adventure (if you can call it an adventure) 1922. I've attached the Inform file below so you can see how I did things.

Two things asked specifically about in class:

1. Smoking. In Inform, the smoking was written exactly as illustrated below:

Quote:
Cigarettes are carried.

Smoking is an action applying to one carried thing. Understand "smoke [something preferably held]" as smoking.

Report smoking:
say "You smoke a cigarette and relax."

2. Ending the game:

Quote:
[ENDING ROOM] is west of [PREVIOUS ROOM].

After going to [ENDING ROOM]:
say "A somber, mustached, Marcel Proust walks along the shore, throwing shells into the ocean and coughing every now and then. He seems sickly. You have this feeling that he will not live much longer.

You two sit down in the sand and reminisce about things past.";
end the game saying "You will live forever, Modernist".

The Problem with Chaotic Fiction

As the author of the Unforums and one of the (I imagine) leading pioneers of ARG (or has he likes to call it, Chaotic Fiction), Spacebass obviously has a lot more experience and understanding of the genre-medium than I do. And after spending enough time interacting with ARG's and understanding the theory behind them, the author grew wary of the term "ARG" itself, as it does not properly convey what the "game" is all about.

I should probably preface this by noting that Spacebass's article is called "Undefining ARG", rather than "defining" ARG. Right from the beginning, "Chaotic Fiction" is therefore considered either an incomplete term (but MORE complete than ARG) or a term embodying a type of game so intrinsically malleable and fluid as to defy all definitions entirely.  read more »
